And just as you say, Lewis is not afraid to give a scathing take on American society, the business world, and their stifling conformism. Lewis doesn't seem to get much critical respect these days, but I think his work is worthy of attention. chattenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04936532239531023408noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4764001039642101892.post-1221171690372406642013-04-13T19:30:10.113-07:002013-04-13T19:30:10.113-07:00One of my all-time favorite books. The Kennicott marriage is essentially a union (and sometimes a battle) between red and blue.

Yet it isn't a flat-out critique of the small town Main Streeters. For all their dissatisfaction with Gopher Prairie, Carol Kennicott and Guy Pollock would still rather live there, when it comes to selecting a permanent home. Erik Valborg, for all his high artistic ambitions, ends up a bit player in a very bad movie. For all his narrow-mindedness and coarseness, Will is often shown as the practical guy who knows how to get things done. Most of the characters are complex in that way: sometimes admirable, sometimes despicable or laughable.Jennifer R.
